Extension cord for mig 01-21-2007, 10:05 AM Hi, I am looking at getting a new mig welder (lincoln 175) but in order to use it I would have to run it off an extension cord- around 100-150ft. I am just curious if this will work, or will it lose to much amperage and not work correctly. In this context, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dan Tags: None
Electrical plug/outlet conversions - Weld Talk Message Boards. The extension cord should have at least 10 gauge wire conductors but 8 gauge (bigger) conductors would be even better. I've heard of people replacing the factory power cord with something like 12/3 or even 10/3. After some research I've decided the cheapest/easiest way to do this is to buy a 20' 12/3 extension cord and lop off the female end and wire it straight to the machine. Moreover, my problem is I'm not sure which wire goes to which terminal. I have a cord 20-25 feet long with 10 gauge wire and there is no problems. Any longer I would go for 8 gauge. Similarly, just make sure your wiring from the panel to the receptacle is capable of handling a welder with a extension cord.

But the extension cord is more efficient, electricity-wise, and cheaper, copper-wise. Similarly, the voltage isn't going to make it an expensive extension cord. 10/3 SO cord is all you need, and you could even get by with 12/3 if you were poor. The ends will cost about $15 each for NEMA 6-50 configurations. Additionally, handler 125 Extension Cord Confusion - Weld Talk Message Boards.
